Thomas Muller admits Bayern didn't deserve to win Bundesliga in refreshingly honest interview

Thomas Muller admits Bayern didn't deserve to win Bundesliga in refreshingly honest interview

Bayern Munich clinched the Bundesliga title in dramatic fashion on the final day.

Thomas Muller delivered a refreshingly honest post-match interview after Bayern Munich defended their Bundesliga crown on a dramatic final day.

The Bavarians secured an 11th consecutive top flight title at the RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday afternoon, when second-half substitute Jamal Musiala scored an 89th-minute winner against FC Koln.

Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, stumbled to a 2-2 draw at home to Mainz, meaning the two teams were level on points at the end of play.

But goal-happy Bayern lifted the Meisterschale trophy on goal difference.

After the full-time whistle, experienced forward Muller admitted his side didn't deserve the lift the Bundesliga title after Dortmund tripped at the final hurdle.

"Everyone who is interested in football must have a subliminal feeling that we don't really deserve it. And I say that openly," he said.

"I understand because our second half of the season was so chaotic on and off the pitch. I'm definitely not apologising for the fact that we won the championship and that we're happy about it.

"But when you think of the others it can change your perspective, I'm sorry. Even if they don't want to hear it or don't need it at all. I don't necessarily want to come off as big-hearted or anything, but that's tough.”

Muller went on to label their most recent Bundesliga triumph the "craziest" yet.

"The most emotional was perhaps my first but I think that was the craziest," he said. "And I don't know if you can measure what the pancreas releases there."

Shortly after the full-time whistle, it was announced that Bayern's board – consisting of CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic – had been sacked.

Muller was surprised by the decision. "That's coming now, a minute after the final whistle?" he said. "Good job from you. I didn't know anything about that until now."

The German added: "A lot is happening and we have to digest that. We have a political issue at the club that clouds this title. Nevertheless, this was not a season with which we can be satisfied.

“Hasan and Oliver called me around eight weeks ago, persuaded me and convinced me that we should do it together. I also persuaded and convinced my assistant coaches.

"The two were instrumental in the fact that we went on this journey and that we were trusted. So I have to process that first.

"I've known about the decision since yesterday. Instead of celebrating, we have another political issue."
