Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wants to set up North vs South Premier League All Star clash

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wants to set up North vs South Premier League All Star clash

Who would win in a match up between the North and the South?

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wants to set up a North vs South Premier League All Star game, in order to boost the football pyramid.

Since he became the owner of the Stamford Bridge club, American businessman Boehly has been making headlines left, right and centre.

He spent a record breaking £260 million in his first transfer window after bringing in the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.

Boehly then shocked English football to the core by sacking manager Thomas Tuchel after just six Premier League games, replacing the German with his top target for his plans for the club, Graham Potter.

It looks like he is not showing signs of stopping as he is plotting further changes to English football.

Speaking during the SALT conference, he suggested a play off to see who goes down and who remains in the Premier League. The American also claimed that the league is missing out economically by not having an all star match, like the NBA and the MLB.

Boehly said: “Ultimately I hope the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports and really starts to figure out, 'Why wouldn't we do a tournament with the bottom four teams? Why isn't there an all-star game?'

“People are talking about more money for the pyramid... the MLB all-star game in Los Angeles this year made $200m [£173m] from a Monday and Tuesday.”

“You could do a North vs South all-star game in the Premier League and fund whatever the pyramid needed very easily.”

He added: “Everyone likes the idea of more revenue for the league.

“There is a cultural aspect that is real and evolution will come. The nice thing about the Premier League is you own the worldwide rights.”

If the North vs South clash does go ahead, it could generate huge attention as fans will be interested to see which side would come out on top.

Boehly also stated that he wants to add to his football portfolio.

He said: “We're not expecting to be the football experts to find the best talent, we're going to put those people in place.

“We've talked about having a multi-club model - I would love to build out the footprint.”
