David Ornstein reveals the stumbling block Arsenal face in Ivan Toney transfer pursuit

David Ornstein reveals the stumbling block Arsenal face in Ivan Toney transfer pursuit

Ornstein has given the latest.

David Ornstein has given a significant update on Arsenal's reported pursuit of Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Toney is currently banned from football due to gambling offences, and has not played a competitive game since last season as a result.

The England striker's ban expires on January 17, however, meaning he is eligible to sign and play for another club during the upcoming transfer window.

He has been linked with moves to both Arsenal and Chelsea, with the Gunners potentially holding an advantage due to the fact that they are currently playing European football.

Now, Ornstein has given an update on whether Arsenal can and will sign him.

Writing in a Q&A session for The Athletic, Ornstein confirmed that there is 'admiration' among Emirates Stadium chiefs for Toney - but there is an issue involved that could allow other clubs to jump ahead of them in the queue to sign the 26-year-old.

He wrote: "Toney's contract expires in 2025 and while Brentford would love him to extend, there is no sign of it at the moment. Unless that changes, they'll need to at least consider a sale.

"His changes of agents to CAA Stellar suggests he may be keen to move in January or the summer.

"But his price will be very high and will Arsenal (if they want him) be able to afford that?

"The structure of their deal for David Raya shows FFP is a real concern, and although the Kroenkes have shown a willingness to spend heavily, they might not be able to do this easily.

"Chelsea might seek to sign a striker, if Manchester United's forwards do not produce and they free up some funds through departures, they could potentially look to enter the market, and I'm sure there are suitors."
