Chelsea enquired about Nottingham Forest star on deadline day, he helped them to 1-0 win the next day

Chelsea enquired about Nottingham Forest star on deadline day, he helped them to 1-0 win the next day

Chelsea had an enquiry dismissed by Forest.

Chelsea launched an enquiry for a Nottingham Forest player on transfer deadline day, according to a new report - with the same player in the side that defeated them 1-0 at Stamford Bridge the following day.

Mauricio Pochettino's side fell to their first home defeat of the season against Forest, with former Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.

The result was the latest setback in a series of disappointments on the pitch for the Blues in the last 12 months.

One fan called for Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva to be dropped - prompting a strong response from the Brazilian.

And a mistake from new signing Moises Caicedo - now Britain's most expensive player of all time after Chelsea signed him for £110 million - led to Elanga's goal.

For Forest, the result provides them with another major confidence boost, having completed the signings of seven players, including Ibrahim Sangare, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Nicolas Dominguez and Divock Origi, on deadline day.

And despite losing Brennan Johnson to Tottenham, they managed to hold on to another one of their key players amid late interest from Chelsea.

Chelsea 'enquired over Nottingham Forest transfer'

According to Paul Taylor of The Athletic, Chelsea enquired over a move for forward Taiwo Awoniyi before the deadline.

The Nigeria international scored in each of Forest's opening three games this season, and started in the 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Awoniyi signed for Liverpool in 2015 after graduating through the Imperial Soccer Academy, but struggled to gain a UK work permit throughout his time at Anfield and never made a senior appearance.

He signed permanently for Union Berlin in 2021, scoring 20 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions before sealing a transfer to Forest.

At the City Ground, he netted 10 goals in 27 Premier League games last term, which were vital in keeping Steve Cooper's side in the Premier League.

And Taylor adds that the enquiry for Awoniyi was dismissed by Forest, who are keen for the 26-year-old striker to lead the line once again this season as they attempt to push their way up the table.
