Liverpool to submit improved Romeo Lavia bid as 'firm interest' from Chelsea revealed

Liverpool to submit improved Romeo Lavia bid as 'firm interest' from Chelsea revealed

Big news for Liverpool fans.

Liverpool now have a 'high chance' of completing a deal for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia despite seeing an opening bid rejected, according to David Ornstein.

The Reds submitted an offer of £37 million for the 19-year-old former Manchester City wonderkid on Tuesday. However, it was turned down by the Championship side.

Southampton are said to want £50 million to part company with their key asset, who was one of their star players last season despite relegation from the Premier League.

New manager Russell Martin is looking to guide them straight back up at the first attempt, and Lavia would be a critical player in his preferred possession-based system.

However, Ornstein says Liverpool's chances of signing him have been given a boost.

Liverpool have 'high chance' of signing Lavia

According to The Athletic reporter, Liverpool are preparing a fresh bid to sign Lavia, clearly undeterred by Southampton's rejection of their first offer.

It is claimed that there is an 'increasing likelihood' of a deal being agreed between the two clubs, with the Reds' offer potentially containing add-ons that could take their bid beyond Southampton's £50 million asking price.

Critically, Ornstein also reports that personal terms will not be an issue, even though Chelsea remain interested in the midfielder.

Speaking after Southampton's friendly win over Bournemouth on Tuesday, in which Lavia played 45 minutes, Saints boss Martin said he 'doesn't know' about where the Belgian's future lies.

If Liverpool do get a deal across the line, the 19-year-old would be the latest piece to complete the Liverpool midfield jigsaw after a series of departures.

In addition, club captain Jordan Henderson is set to move to Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, although Fabinho's move to Al Ittihad is now in 'jeopardy', according to Ornstein.

Lavia made 29 appearances for Southampton last season in what was his first full campaign of Premier League football following his move from Manchester City.
