Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has explained why he turned down Manchester United in order to join Belgian club Sint-Truidense V.V.
The 20-year-old had been identified by Erik ten Hag and his scouting staff as a potential backup to Andre Onana, who signed from Inter Milan last month.
According to reports, United agreed a fee with Suzuki's parent club, Urawa Reds, to sign the goalkeeper.

But the Japan international, who was born in the United States, elected to reject the chance to move to Old Trafford and join STVV instead - who are owned by Japan-based electronic firm DMM.
The move is a loan deal covering the 2023/24 season, with Suzuki joining the side that finished in 12th place in the Belgian Pro League last term, winning 11 of their 34 matches.
Now, he has explained his reasons behind turning down United and Ten Hag.

Speaking in a recent interview following his loan move, Suzuki revealed that he hopes his time at STVV will provide a stepping stone to helping him become one of the top goalkeepers in the world.
He also expressed how Onana's position as number one goalkeeper at United would have made it difficult to get playing time.
He said (quotes via Goal): "It's true that there was an offer from Manchester United. As a football player and as a person, if I hadn't thought about anything, of course I would like to go to Manchester United.

"But among them, I really want to spend time thinking about what kind of future awaits me. After much thought, I made this decision.
"Manchester United have acquired Onana. It's important for me to participate in matches, and I think it is also important to play on the world stage. I want to make the most of what I have learned here and do my best."
Crucially, Suzuki added that he would like to play in the Premier League in the future - citing that no Japanese goalkeeper has ever played in the top flight of English football.
The United opportunity may have closed by then, but if he impresses at STVV, other clubs may well take an interest.
