Rhian Brewster £23.5 Million Deal Continues Liverpool's Excellent Selling History

Liverpool have sold Rhian Brewster to Sheffield United for £23.5 million, which will further improve their excellent record of selling players.

Brewster, who was on loan at Swansea City last season, completed his move to the Blades after a medical on Friday.

It's a good price for a 20-year-old who is yet to play in the Premier League and the Reds will also have a 15% sell on clause and a buy back clause, should they decide to re-sign him in the next three years.

The Premier League champions' sporting director Michael Edwards seems to have once again done excellent business for his club, with one tweet pointing out how good they've been at selling unwanted players.

Of course the Reds sold Jordon Ibe to Bournemouth in the summer of 2016 so it's not quite a fair comparison but it's easy to see how good the record is if you look back through the last few years.

The league champions got £15 million for Ibe when he left four years ago, after playing 58 times for the side, but his time with the Cherries was rather unspectacular and he was released this summer after his contract expired.

Two years later Liverpool again made good money this time by selling back-up goalkeeper Danny Ward to Leicester City for around £13 million, having previously played just three games for the club.

In January 2019 Edwards was at it again as he sold Dominic Solanke for £20 million to Bournemouth, having joined Liverpool for £3 million from Chelsea in May 2017.

He had made 27 appearances and scored just one goal in the 18 months he was at the club and so far he has just five goals in 50 appearances for Bournemouth, and was unable to keep them from going down last season.

Even selling Danny Ings earned the Reds over £10 million in profit when he was sold to Southampton, with injuries reducing him to just 25 appearances for the Anfield side.

This summer Liverpool sold 31-year-old centre back Dejan Lovren for £10.8 million, which was pretty good business, and signed Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota and Konstantinos Tsimikas for a total of £72 million.

Selling Brewster, no matter how good he could go on to be, for the price they have is very good work indeed, especially after Covid-19.
