Wesley Sneijder may never have actually played for Manchester United but he's certainly endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful by taking a dig at their rivals Liverpool when explaining why he didn't move to the Reds.

No matter how many times Wesley Sneijder was supposed to go to Manchester United he never seemed to end up there, and that was a lot of times. Both before and after his treble win a transfer window couldn't go by without the two linked with inevitably nothing happening.

Sneijder for some time was one of the best midfielders in the world, possibly the best player in the world the year he helped Inter win Serie A, Coppa Italia, Champions League and got Netherlands to the World Cup final.

Sneijder could definitely claim a place in our transfers that never happened XI:

The Dutchman eventually left Italy for Turkey in 2013, then aged still only 28. According to reports he had the chance to go to the Premier League at that time but with Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool rather than their north west rivals.

In a recent interview, via the Liverpool Echo, the 33 year-old explained why he picked Galatasaray over Liverpool, saying:

"Many clubs wanted to know when I was leaving Inter, and Liverpool was one of those clubs, so people were surprised I chose Galatasaray.

"Why Galatasaray and not Liverpool? But I am a winner, I play for prizes, so I went to Galatasaray because I thought that I would win more at Galatasaray and be champion than at Liverpool, and I think afterwards that I made the right choice.

"I have had nice years in Turkey."

Sneijder moved to Istanbul for €7.5 million and his decision paid instant dividends winning the 2012/13 Super Lig title with his new club before going on to lift the trophy again in the 2014/15 season.

Liverpool would finish that first season 7th before Rodgers led his side to second in the Premier League the next season, with Steven Gerrard's slip of course, and the draw to Crystal Palace, costing them a first Premier League title.

The Reds haven't won a trophy in the time since Sneijder could have joined them till now but he picked up two league medals as well as a further six victories in cups.

The former Ajax man moved to Nice at the beginning of this season but didn't last long in Ligue 1 before being released and then signed by Qatar Stars League club Al-Gharafa.

He may never have played for United but he'll always have a place in their hearts, especially now!
