Wayne Rooney messages Eddie Hearn asking for fights when he is drunk

Wayne Rooney messages Eddie Hearn asking for fights when he is drunk

Eddie Hearn says former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney messages him about potential fights.

Eddie Hearn says Wayne Rooney messages him about potential fights after he's had a drink.

Rooney has always shown an interest in the sport. In fact, at the end of last year, the former Manchester United and England forward challenged YouTuber-turned-boxer KSI to a bout.

KSI, real name Olajide "JJ" Olatunji, opened up about Rooney's call-out when he spoke to reporters at a press conference.

"It's funny, and I hope he doesn't get annoyed that I'm saying this, but Wayne Rooney hit me up saying 'oh we should fight'," the 29-year-old said.

KSI confirmed he turned down the offer but agreed that it would be good to have the DC United manager in and around the influencer boxing space.

With that in mind, promoter Eddie Hearn has only increased speculation around Rooney's future in the ring with a comment about his tendency to message the chairman of Matchroom Sport after a drink.

Speaking on the latest episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Hearn was asked if any footballers could turn their hand to boxing.

He replied: “Rooney can fight, I’ve spoke to Wayne. When Wayne has a drink, he’ll message me and he’ll start going, ‘I’ll fight him and I’ll fight him,’ and I get excited.

“Sometimes I get a message from Wayne saying, ‘Make me vs so and so, make that fight.’

“I’ll look at it in the morning and go, ‘This is massive.’ So I’ll message him back, ‘Few glasses of red or [are you serious?]’ Then he won’t reply and I’ll go, ‘Damn.’

“But Wayne can fight.”

Rooney, as he points out in the above video with BoxNation, was a keen boxer growing up but eventually he decided to pursue a career in football.

It was revealed last year that Tyson Fury was preparing for a potential bout with Oleksandr Usyk by bringing in the former Everton striker.

"I spoke to Wayne last night and he's well up for it," Fury said in an ITV interview.

"But he's a right-handed person, so he has to switch up to be a southpaw, left-handed. So we're going to bring Wayne in for preparation for Usyk."

When asked if he was joking, Fury responded: "No, [I'm being] very very serious. He's agreed, so he's going to come into camp for about four weeks and help me. I'm a big fan of his as well."

In a hypothetical world, who should be Wayne Rooney's first fight?
