Barcelona boss Xavi apologises and backtracks over Dani Alves comments

Barcelona manager Xavi has apologised about comments he made about former teammate Dani Alves, following the right back's arrest.

Alves was arrested last week for sexual assault, over claims made about the defender relating to an incident in a Barcelona nightclub at the end of last year.

The 39-year-old was sacked by Mexican club Pumas in the wake of the arrest and he is currently being detained in a prison outside of the city.

He has denied any wrongdoing and will likely appeal to be bailed, but could remain in Brians 1 prison for a number of weeks, or even months.

Ahead of their game against Getafe, Barca manager Xavi, who played in the same incredible team as Alves, revealed his state of 'shock' at the news.

He added that it was a matter of justice and that felt 'very bad' for the Brazilian, which didn't go down well with people and led to criticism.

After the match, with critics pointing out that the manager hadn't even mentioned the victim, negating her experience, Xavi apologised for his previous comments.

"What I said about Alves was misinterpreted, perhaps I was not strong enough," he said.

"I ignored the victim, all these acts must be condemned, whether Dani or anyone else does it. I apologise, it was unfortunate.

"It is a very tough subject, but I forgot to talk about the victims. All these types of acts must be condemned, both in gender violence and in rapes."

During their time together at the Camp Nou, Xavi and Alves won five La Liga titles, three Champions League trophies and three Copa del Rey crowns.

Alves then returned to play under Xavi in 2021 aged 38, making 17 appearances before leaving for Mexican side Pumas, who he has now left.

Barca came through their game on Sunday with a 1-0 win, thanks to a goal by Pedri in the 35th minute, as they continue their impressive form.

The Catalan giants currently lead La Liga by three points from fierce rivals Real Madrid, and they have beaten Los Blancos recently, winning the Supercopa in Saudi Arabia 3-1.
