Cameron Smith admits he’s ‘ready to cop some heat’ over LIV Golf response

The Australian admitted his non-comments about his LIV Golf situation left many reading between the lines.

Aussie golf star Cameron Smith has claimed he’s ‘ready to cop some heat’ over his responses surrounding his LIV Golf status.

The world number two has been committed to not letting any talk of the Saudi Arabian-backed league get in the way of his golf, denying to comment about any potential contract with LIV Golf.

Earlier this week a report from the UK Telegraph had revealed the Aussie had signed a $140 million deal to join the league.

It followed comments from fellow Australian player that Smith and countryman Marc Leishman had taken the LIV contract while speaking to RSN radio.

The report was obviously a hot topic of conversation among the press, however, Smith refused to be drawn into comments about his situation.

His evident non-denial of any contract with LIV Golf caused a storm, which Sky Sports noted following his opening round of three-under at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

SkySports asked Smith: “Do you understand where the journalists go with that when they read between the lines of those sorts of comments?”

The Open champion said he understood the line of questioning from the press, adding: I’m ready to cop some heat. I understand that’s what I’ve said.

“But like I said I’m here to win the FedEx Cup playoffs, that’s my number one goal. Whatever happens after that will come from me.”

The Brisbane-born player had been cagey with press following a barrage of questions about the rebel league, refusing to delve into the report from the UK Telegraph.

Smith said: “You know, my goal here is to win the FedExCup Playoffs. That’s all I’m here for.”

Adding: “I’m a man of my word and whenever you guys need to know anything, it’ll be said by me.”

Pushed further to comment on report, Smith simply replied: “I have no comment to that.”

The Australian was again pressed about the LIV Golf situation, giving a similar answer before saying ‘thanks’ and cutting the press conference short, according to FoxSports Australia.

Smith could take over the number one sport in the world rankings with a victory in Memphis, dependent on how Scottie Sheffler finishes.

It would signal a huge move for LIV Golf to have the number one ranked golfer jump ship to their league.

Smith would join the likes of Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka if he were to sign with LIV Golf.
