There was controversy in college football this weekend as Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly claimed his whole team should be executed following their win over Florida State.
On Sunday, Notre Dame needed overtime in order to defeat their rivals but despite eventually seeing his players get the win, the coach clearly wasn't happy at all.

Whilst being interviewed by ABC's Katie George about Florida State's late comeback, that saw them win the 4th quarter 18-0 and force overtime, Kelly said his whole team needed to be executed.
"I'm in favor of execution. Maybe our entire team needs to be executed after tonight. We just didn't execute very well."
After an unsurprisingly bad reaction to Kelly's words, the former Southern California coach tried to explain that he was just paraphrasing a joke by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach John McKay.

"It's an old John McKay quote," Kelly told reporters, "I was kidding. It was tongue-in-cheek. It wasn't funny? ... I was talking and making a joke about it. It was taken serious? Are you people crazy?
"It's a John McKay quote that he used after a game," the Fighting Irish boss added, "I was stealing one of his old quotes and being funny, because nobody likes to be funny anymore. If you want to take me to town on that, please do."
Kelly might have claimed that 'nobody likes to be funny anymore' but it's actually just that McKay's joke was very funny and his retelling wasn't at all.

In 1976 the Buccaneers went 0-14 and McKay was asked about his team's execution, with the coach quickly answering, "I'm in favor of it," Kelly on the other hand was the one that brought up execution for no reason other than to contrive his 'joke.'
