Legendary Rugby League Commentator Ray Warren Calls Time On His 55-Year Career

It's a dark day for sport with the voice of rugby league officially announcing his retirement.

Ray Warren has called time on his legendary career as a commentator after 55 years on the mic.

And at 78 years of age, it's safe to say he has well and truly cemented himself as an NRL legend.

"I had nothing to prove," Warren told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"It's been easy leaving the commentary box, but each time I came back I knew I was getting closer to making a fool of myself.

"After I called last year's grand final between Penrith and Souths, I walked out feeling like I'd done a good job. I knew after that game it was my last."

When you think of some of the NRL's most iconic moments throughout the years, Warren's voice immediately comes to mind to accompany the footage.

Incredibly, he has called 99 of the 122 State of Origin clashes played since the series' inception in 1982.

On top of that, Warren has been in the commentary box for a whopping 45 Grand Finals.

His legacy will live long in the memories of rugby league fans, both young and old.
