Jon Jones might be one of the most controversial athletes on the planet but the UFC's light heavyweight champion has been voted ahead of the retiring George St-Pierre as the promotions best ever fighter.

'Best ever' is a very controversial discussion no matter what sport you are talking about. There aren't many, if any, sports where it's obvious who the greatest of all time is.

Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and Wayne Gretzky might be the closest names in their sport to being almost undeniable as the best of all time in their sport, perhaps Serena Williams too.

In football people can't even decide who the best player in the world is right now, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo splitting votes, never mind adding in the likes of Diego Maradona, Pele and Johan Cruyff.

On Wednesday afternoon former two weight UFC champion George St-Pierre announced his retirement from MMA, for the second. Any list would certainly name GSP as one of the all time greats of UFC.

Just where the Canadian comes is up for debate, so we decided to find out. The 37 year old was beaten into third place by Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, with Demetrious Johnson in fourth:

Jones is a controversial character having failed drugs tests on several occasions and been banned for illegal substances.

The American also had to give up his light heavyweight title at one point due to a hit and run incident, although he never had any prison time.

'Bones' returned to the octagon in December, for the first time in over a year following his latest drugs ban, and beat Alexander Gustafsson for the vacant title.

He will defend the title next against Anthony Smith at UFC 235 on Saturday 2nd March.

GSP last fought in November 2017, beating Michael Bisping for the middleweight title on his debut at the weight, and announced his retirement on Thursday:

He will go down as an all time great.
