Dana White Confirms Jon Jones Will Fight For The UFC Heavyweight Championship

Dana White has confirmed that Jon Jones will fight for the UFC heavyweight title, with the former light heavyweight champion waiting on the result of Stipe Miocic vs Francis Ngannou.

Jones last fought over a year ago, controversially defending his light heavyweight title at UFC 247 against Dominick Reyes.

He has since then given up his title as he eyes a move to heavyweight, to fight for the title at the UFC's heaviest weight.

There has been call outs, contract issues, fall outs with Dana White and building his weight up for the previous year, as 'Bones' waits for the opponent he craves, the UFC heavyweight champion.

Right now that's Miocic and White has confirmed his next challenger will be Jones, though the 33-year-old will face Ngannou, if the Cameroonian becomes champion.

"We know what he wants," White said about Jones to TMZ, "He wants the winner of Stipe and Francis, so that fight has got to happen first.

"It should happen this year. It depends if that fight with Stipe and Francis goes off before summer. Then we could have (Jones vs. the winner) happen in the summertime."

That first fight is due to take place at UFC 260 on March 27th, and White will be hoping neither man has to pull out for any reason.

The pair have already fought once, with Miocic winning a unanimous points decision in January 2018.

Ngannou, who was undefeated in the UFC before that loss, then picked up his second loss, with Derrick Lewis beating him on a points decision.

The 34-year-old has won his previous four fights since then, all with first round stoppages, to set up his rematch for the title.

He was the first opponent that Jones called out in the heavyweight division, whilst he was still light heavyweight champion.

Miocic is considered the greatest heavyweight in UFC history by many, especially following his epic trilogy with Jones' former rival Daniel Cormier.

The 38-year-old has the record for the longest streak defending the heavyweight title, at three wins, before losing to Cormier in July 2018.

He won the title back just over a year later and in August 2020 won their rubber match at UFC 252, with DC retiring after the loss.
