Bizarre Story Of How UFC Star Jose Aldo Got His Distinctive Facial Scar

Jose Aldo, who returns to the Octagon on Saturday, once opened up on how he got his unique facial scar.

The former UFC featherweight champion lost his title in 13 seconds to Conor McGregor back in 2015. That established the Irishman as the new face of the UFC and ended Aldo's lengthy, 18-fight win streak in MMA.

The 34-year-old Brazilian has had his ups and downs since and is currently trying to snap a three-fight losing streak when he takes on Ecuador's Marlon Vera on the 'Fight Night: Thompson vs Neal' card.

However Aldo is used to overcoming difficulties throughout his life. As is illustrated by the gruesome story behind the notable scar on the left side of his face.

Aldo received the injury as a young infant via a bizarre accident. It reportedly occurred at a family party when Aldo's eldest sibling, Joseline, picked up Aldo's crib - with him in it - and threw it at her sister.

Aldo ended up landing face-first on a lit barbecue, leaving him scarred for life.

"They were playing around and threw me in there," Aldo said, per talkSPORT, in an interview in 2009. "It was hot. I was a little baby. They were little kids.

"There was another time when my little sister broke my head. I have all kinds of stories."

This story alone is shocking enough. Aldo has overcome a lot to become one of the more recognisable figures in the UFC. As a child he began training in capoeira, then Brazilian jiu-jitsu, to protect himself from being beaten up on the streets.

That clearly worked as became a professional MMA fighter who went on to score wins over Urijah Faber, Cub Swanson, Kenny Florian, plus two victories apiece against Chad Mendes and Frankie Edgar.

Since his one-punch KO at the fists of McGregor, Aldo has lost in UFC title fights to Max Holloway (featherweight) and Petr Yan (bantamweight).

The defeat to Russia's Yan at UFC 251 in July was Aldo's last outing in the Octagon.

The 34-year-old, who's overcome so much in life, is looking for another comeback win to end December 2020 on a positive note.
