UFC legend Joe Rogan believes that Conor McGregor might have suffered his horrific leg break against Dustin Poirier due to him training without shin pads.

McGregor, 33, was unable to avenge his UFC 257 defeat to Poirier when the pair collided for their trilogy fight at UFC 264 in July.

The Irish superstar's ankle appeared to roll over when he stepped backwards late in the first round, with Poirier sealing a TKO win via doctor's stoppage.

McGregor claimed on social media it was a "clean break of the tibia" after he was taken out of the UFC 264 octagon on a stretcher.

The Notorious underwent successful surgery on the injury, but UFC president Dana White has revealed that McGregor could be out of action for some time.

Rogan has now revealed that he 'thinks' that McGregor was trying to spar in his training camp without wearing protective shin pads.

The 53-year-old UFC colour commentator claimed that McGregor was "so hell-bent on destroying Dustin Poirier" that he believes the rumblings of him training without shin pads could be true.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, he said: "I've been told that McGregor had a stress fracture in his leg before the fight started.

"I think he was trying to spar during camp with no shin pads. Don't know if it's true.

"I was getting texts from tons of people and some in Conor's camp. They were saying he was training without shin pads.

"He was so hell-bent on destroying Dustin Poirier that he may have done something like that [training without shin pads].

"There was clearly something wrong with his leg going in. Your leg just doesn't break like that."

McGregor insisted that he was injured ahead of his UFC 264 defeat to Poirier, with the Notorious backing up his claim by posting 'proof' of his injury on social media.

White has also claimed that the future UFC Hall of Famer has "chronic arthritis in his ankles," saying McGregor has "had ankle issues for [the] last couple of years."
