Daniel Cormier Says Only One Opponent 'Makes Sense' For Conor McGregor

The former heavyweight champion says that Justin Gaethje's upcoming fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov leaves the Irishman with just one choice.

Daniel Cormier has backed Conor McGregor to face Nate Diaz in a trilogy fight this summer, saying it's the only fight for McGregor that 'makes sense.'

The Notorious returned to action in January after more than a year off, with a win at welterweight against Donald Cerrone, and was then expected to face Justin Gaethje in the summer.

Things changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Gaethje is now interim lightweight champion and waiting to face Khabib Nurmagomedov, leaving the Irishman with a gap in his diary.

Former heavyweight champ Cormier believes that only the third fight against Diaz should be considered for that summer fight.

"f Khabib's fighting Gaethje in September. Conor fights in July vs 'Big Nate', 'Nasty Nate', the third fight," he told Ariel Helwani on ESPN's 'DC and Helwani.'

"This is the one. It's the only one that makes sense on Fight Island.

The two rivals met twice in 2016 in a pair of epic fights that were instant classics. Diaz, at very short notice, won the first fight, which was McGregor's debut at welterweight, before the Irishman got revenge in the second fight a few months later.

Since then the idea of their trilogy has always excited fans and been talked up at different times by the Notorious, the Stockton Slugger and Dana White.

With McGregor's last fight being at welterweight there's every chance he could fight at the weight again and has also been linked with potential fights against Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman.

Diaz's last fight was in his BMF title loss to Masvidal, when the referee decided he could no longer continue after the third round.

The two rivals exchanged barbs on social media last week with McGregor telling Diaz to 'shut your eyes and sign the contract.'

After Gaethje beat Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, former two weight champion McGregor questioned whether the unification fight between the Highlight and Khabib would ever happen, and then began attacking both men, as well Ferguson and Dustin Poirier.
