Aussie Boxer Benjamin Hussain Fights For Five Rounds With 'Worst Broken Jaw We've Ever Seen'

Benjamin Hussain, you are tough as nails my friend.

The Aussie boxer somehow fought for five rounds with a broken jaw before his bout against Ben Mahoney was finally waved off.

And when we saw broken jaw, what we really mean is that it was shattered in several places and looked like it was hanging on by a thread.

Yes, that's really how bad it was.

Queensland duo Hussain and Mahoney were going toe-to-toe in Brisbane on Thursday in a hotly-contested super welterweight boxing match.

That was until Mahoney hit Hussain with a devastating shot in the second round that broke the 21-year-old's jaw.

At first it just looked like a nasty cut, but as the fight went on the commentators quickly realised that the injury was far worse than that.

"Oh jeez, yeah, that is horrific," bout-caller Ben Damon said.

Incredibly, Hussain soldiered on and continued to fight.

But with his jaw literally swinging with every sudden movement, the referee was having none of it and finally called in the event doctor.

"Your jaw is broken, mate," the doctor said.

"I'm sorry, I really am. I mean it's badly broken, we've got to stop it."

And that was that.

The fighter's appeals fell on deaf ears and the bout was called off by the referee, meaning Hussain's unblemished undefeated record came to an end.

But while the walking wounded Hussain was undoubtedly left licking his wounds, the boxing community rallied behind the young warrior to praise him for his courageous efforts.

As video of Hussain's injury flooded social media, British boxing journalist Chisanga Malata re-tweeted the clip with the caption: "Good lord. This is hands down the worst broken jaw I've ever seen."

"We thought it might have been a cut tongue or laceration inside the mouth," Damon added after Mahoney had his hand raised by the referee.

"But it is a broken jaw and with that being said, Benjamin Hussain has shown he's otherworldly tough.

"He's gone through the vast majority of this fight with what appears to be a very, very badly damaged mouth and jaw."

Despite the end to his unbeaten record, Hussain has certainly gained the respect of the wider boxing community through his sheer drive and toughness. Respect.
