Fans have heaped praise on Naomi Osaka for well and truly putting an interviewer in his place.

And the video of the "awkward" incident makes for awesome viewing.

23-year-old Osaka was giving a post-match interview at the Australian Open following her impressive 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Garbine Muguruza.

The number three seed put her body on the line in a two-hour-long gruelling match and even saved two match points on her way to victory.

But instead of getting a straight-forward question from on-court interviewer Brett Phillips after the match, Osaka received a long-winded gabbling statement from him - and she wasn't having a bar of it.

"Wow, that was worthy of a grand slam final," Phillips said.

"What a match, Naomi. You pulled out the big stuff when you needed it most - to save match points. You talked about the fight you had to show in your last match that you were impressed with.

"Well, today you had to take it to another level against a quality opponent."

Much like Japanese fan favourite Osaka, us viewers watching from home were also waiting for some sort of question from Phillips to accompany his big opening statement.

But it didn't come.

So, without any hesitation, Osaka answered the best way she could.

"Ummm... that wasn't a question," she simply said.

"But yeah, I feel like today I didn't really know what to expect because I've never played her before. But I just knew it was going to be tough. I'm kind of tired right now."

While some viewers described the incident as "awkward", others sympathised with Osaka and praised her for her brutal honesty.

It must be really frustrating for professional athletes who work their socks off during matches only to be asked really average questions during their post-game interviews.

And when footage of the moment surfaced on social media, fans rallied around Osaka and encouraged more tennis players to do the same in future.

Well played Naomi, well played.
