Kevin De Bruyne may need surgery on his hamstring, could be out for the remainder of 2023

Kevin De Bruyne was forced off injured against Burnley.

Kevin De Bruyne may need surgery on his hamstring which could rule him out for the remainder of 2023, according to reports in Belgium.

De Bruyne pulled up in the first-half of Manchester City's Premier League season opener against Burnley last Friday.

He was forced off injured as he suffered a hamstring problem - the same injury during last season's Champions League final.

According to Nieuwsblad Sport, the star midfielder could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

They claim he may have to undergo surgery on the hamstring injury sustained at Turf Moor, ruling him out for the rest of the year and recovering by early 2024.

A final decision has not yet been made, but surgery is seen as the best solution.

Pep Guardiola has confirmed the reports, revealing De Bruyne will undergo surgery to treat his hamstring.

The Blues boss claimed the Belgium international will be out for 'three or four months'.

He said: "We have to decide [on] his surgery. We will decide in the next days. Surgery is surgery, three or four months out.

"The injury to Kevin is a blow, a big loss. He has specific qualities. For a long time is really tough for us. We have to look forward. We have alternatives.

"Kevin is irreplaceable, but we have talented players. They will take it."

On whether De Bruyne will see Dr. Ramon Cugat, Guardiola replied: "He saw the images, saw them personally. Two or three doctors had the same opinion."

The 32-year-old starred for Man City last season as he inspired his side to a famous treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and the Champions League.

He played 49 games in all competitions, but failed to see out the Istanbul showdown against Inter.
