"I've got to say..." - Mark Goldbridge reacts to Man Utd's statement on Mason Greenwood

"I've got to say..." - Mark Goldbridge reacts to Man Utd's statement on Mason Greenwood

Greenwood has mutually agreed to leave United.

Mark Goldbridge has given his view on Manchester United's announcement that Mason Greenwood is set to leave the club.

United confirmed on Monday that Greenwood will leave the Premier League side by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.

Greenwood was suspended by United in January 2022 after being arrested and later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped earlier this year after key witnesses withdrew their involvement in the case and new material came to light during the police investigation.

Following an internal investigation into Greenwood's behaviour, the decision has now been made for the player to leave.

"All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United," read a club statement.

"It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.

"Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.

"That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for."

In a statement of his own, Greenwood accepted he had "made mistakes" and took his "share of responsibility" - but added: "I did not do the things I was accused of."

Reports this week claim United had initially planned to keep Greenwood before being forced to change their plans in the wake of backlash from supporters.

Manchester United fans and YouTuber Goldbridge believes the club has now made the correct decision.

"On reflection, I think this is the right decision," Goldbridge told The United Stand.

"It is the right decision. He is never going to move past it and the club would never move past making that decision. I think the decision is right.

"I don't agree with the [club] statement and I think it puts too many questions out there. People are going to have to make their own mind up about it."
