Rival fans urge Graham Potter to turn down Chelsea for one key reason

Rival fans urge Graham Potter to turn down Chelsea for one key reason

According to various reports, talks are progressing between the club and the current Brighton boss

With reports emerging that Graham Potter is edging closer to becoming Chelsea's new manager, rival fans have been reacting to the news in a variety of different ways.

For some, it's a laughable appointment given Chelsea's lofty ambitions, but for others, he's an immensely talented coach whose abilities could be wasted at the famously trigger-happy West London club.

On Wednesday morning, the surprising news broke that Chelsea had sacked Thomas Tuchel following the sides 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

Almost immediately, Potter was labelled as the favourite to replace the German by bookmakers, followed by the likes of Maurcio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane at slightly longer odds.

Clearly, they knew something we didn't, as later in the day, Sky Sports revealed that Brighton and Hove Albion granted Chelsea permission to speak to their 47-year-old manager, who has been at the Premier League club since 2019.

While nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing (7 September), it seems clear that Potter is Chelsea's number one choice, a decision which has sparked some heated debates online.

Many observers have already taken to social media to express their fears over him going to Chelsea, as they worry that it might not be the right club for him - chiefly due to their history of sacking managers as soon as results begin to dip.

In the case of Tuchel, winning a Champions League title, followed by two cup final appearances and a 3rd placed finish in the Premier League still wasn't enough to buy him more time.

With early season defeats to Southampton, Leeds United and Dinamo Zagreb, the 49-year-old was abruptly sacked. It was a move by the club that was reminiscent of the Roman Abramovich era, one which many fans won't have been expecting under new US-led ownership.

Its for this reason that some pundits and fans don't want Potter go to Stamford Bridge, as there are no guarantee's that he'll be given the time he needs to implement his philosophy.

Ade Oladipo, a broadcaster who works for Talksport and DAZN, Tweeted out on Wednesday afternoon: "If I'm Graham Potter I don't even answer the call."

"History shows that regardless of whatever success you bring to the club you will 100% get sacked after a couple of years."

This viewpoint was shared by many others, who fear that Potter won't be given the leeway or patience he needs to turn Chelsea's fortunes around.

In response to Oladipo's tweet, another user added: "I’d rather be at a secure job at Brighton who keep getting better than go to a job where I could be sacked at any moment."

However, some fans of rival clubs don't want Potter to go to Chelsea for a very different reason.

Several Arsenal fans could be seen cursing Chelsea for landing Potter ahead of their club, despite Mikel Arteta getting the Gunners off to a fine start in the Premier League this season.

Potter's track record speak to what he can do when he has time to build a squad in his own image.

Since taking the reigns at Brighton, the club have steadily improved year on year, culminating in last season's ninth placed finish - their best ever in the Premier League era.
