Lisandro Martinez was in tears after Argentina's win, had to be supported through emotional post-match interview

Lisandro Martinez was in tears after Argentina's win, had to be supported through emotional post-match interview

It was all too much for Martinez.

Lisandro Martinez captured the heart of every football fan after Argentina's dramatic penalty shootout win over the Netherlands at the World Cup.

After a fiery 2-2 draw in regulation time, Argentina ran out 4-3 winners in the shootout to book a place in the semi-finals against Croatia on Tuesday.

Nahuel Molina gave Argentina the lead in the first half before Lionel Messi's penalty in the second appeared to have sewn the tie up.

Wout Weghorst's introduction saw the Netherlands forward score a brace and take the game to added time.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis before Lautaro Martinez scored the all-important spot kick to give La Albiceleste the victory.

It means Lionel Scaloni's side are two games from winning their first World Cup since 1986.

Martinez, who started the game before being substituted for Angel Di Maria, attempted to speak to DEPORTV immediately after the full-time whistle.

The Manchester United defender was already in tears as the interview started, needing to be reassured by the journalist and member of the Argentina staff to continue.

Martinez insisted his side didn't deserve to be eliminated from the competition after looking the better side throughout the game.

He said: "It was just incredible. I just freed [when the final penalty was scored], because we didn’t deserve to end like that.

"We were much better than them.

"I want to hug everyone the players, the coaching staff… everyone!"

Throughout the chat, Martinez rubbed his eyes and put his head into his shirt. The 24-year-old then made his way back to his teammates with his face still bright red. An emotionally draining evening at the Lusail Stadium.

Supporters online have reacted to the footage of Martinez, even claiming they shed a tear.

One person said: "I only wanted Argentina to win for Messi but I love Martinez now as well."

Another put: "You can't dislike this man. He's a pure soul."

A third tweeted: "Such a good centre-back and even better guy. He's perfect."

While someone added: "The wall of Argentina. United are so lucky to have him."
