Liverpool midfielder Fabinho at risk of two-match ban and could miss Tottenham clash

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho at risk of two-match ban and could miss Tottenham clash

He would be a major miss.

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho is on the cusp of a two-match ban from Premier League action.

The Reds have endured a season to forget. Despite Monday night’s 6-1 demolition of Leeds, Liverpool remain in eighth place in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the Champions League spots.

While their top-four hopes are slim with just eight games remaining, Jurgen Klopp’s men remain in the hunt for European football next term, with a seventh-place finish likely to qualify for some involvement.

Liverpool’s win at Leeds was their first victory since their stunning mauling 7-0 mauling of Manchester United in early March, and the club will hope the result can spark them into life for the end of the season.

Yet there is a chance Liverpool will be without Fabinho for a couple of games, including an all-important clash with rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Fabinho on cusp of suspension

If Fabinho is booked against Nottingham Forest this weekend, he will be handed a two-match ban.

The Brazilian would be dealt a suspension for picking up his tenth yellow card of the Premier League campaign.

Indeed, according to the Premier League rules, players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in league encounters up to and including their team's 32nd fixture will serve a two-match ban in the competition.

Should Fabinho be booked against Forest he would be suspended for Liverpool’s clashes against West Ham and Tottenham.

The 29-year-old’s latest card was completely avoidable. Fabinho was forced to make a challenge on Leeds’ Brenden Aaronson after his teammates failed to clear their lines.

Referee Craig Pawson issued Fabinho with a caution after the Brazil international cynically took down Aaronson before the US international could punish the Reds’ defensive hiccup.
