Former Liverpool player who paid club fine with 5,000 1p coins returns to the Premier League

A former Liverpool player who once paid a £50 fine with 5,000 1p coins is returning to the Premier League.

After dropping down the divisions, Lawrence Vigouroux has now signed for Premier League newcomers Burnley.

The goalkeeper has earned the Premier League switch after a staggering season at Leyton Orient where the club claimed the League Two title.

Vigouroux kept a staggering 24 clean sheets while only conceding 33 goals in 45 league appearances last term.

Having been voted the club’s player of the year in each of his three full campaigns with Orient, Vigouroux has earned himself a Premier League move, signing a three-year deal with the Clarets.

Vigouroux’s Liverpool career

The 29-year-old was previously on the books at Liverpool between 2014 and 2016, having joined the Reds from Tottenham Hotspur following a successful trial.

By the end of his first season on Merseyside, in which Vigouroux was competing for the under-21 side, the shot-stopper went out on loan.

The former Chile youth international starred in a series of trial matches for Swindon before securing a loan move with the League One side.

However, his time with The Robins was not smooth sailing. Just one month into his loan spell Vigouroux landed himself in trouble after paying a £50 fine with 5,000 1p pieces.

Naturally, the gesture was not well received by manager Mark Cooper and resulted in the promising young keeper being sent back to Liverpool to explain his actions.

Reflecting on the incident following Vigouroux's return to Wiltshire, Cooper explained via the Liverpool Echo: "Lawrence is going to come back, he is very humble and very apologetic.

“He knows the way he behaved was wrong and he has been in the changing room after the game and apologised to the players.

“He asked them if they wanted him back and they all said yes. Lawrence is an exceptional young goalkeeper and it’s important he learns from this little mishap and it will benefit his career going forward.”
