Graeme Souness says two Liverpool players are 'fighting for their futures' at Anfield

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has named two Reds players that he believes are 'fighting for their futures' at Anfield.

It has been a disappointing campaign for Jurgen Klopp's side, who were knocked out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage by Real Madrid and have never been realistic Premier League title contenders.

The Reds have suffered from injuries, whilst fatigue from last season's mammoth 63-game campaign - meaning the Reds played every possible game - has also been cited as a factor in their struggles.

Various areas of the pitch are also seen to be in need of a refresh, with a number of additions to the midfield department likely to be made this summer.

The centre of midfield has improved since the return of Curtis Jones from injury, with the Reds academy graduate having added fresh energy and drive to the middle of the park. He opened the scoring in Sunday's thrilling 4-3 win over Tottenham at Anfield.

Speaking prior to the fixture on Sunday, however, Souness named Jones as one of two Reds players - as well as Spurs stars - currently fighting for his future at the club due to the possibility of new signings this summer - and the young midfielder certainly proved his point to Klopp at Anfield.

The three-time European Cup winner told Sky Sports that both Liverpool and Spurs players have a point to prove between now and the end of the season.

He explained: "The same applies to both clubs - some of them are fighting for their future at the club.

"The young boys - Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones - they have to show the manager you don't have to buy expensive midfield players, we've already got them here.

"For Spurs, a lot of them are playing for their future. This year they've shown they're not up for the fight on a regular basis, every single week.

"We talk about passion. It's not a light switch, you can't turn it off and on. When you play for a big club, you've got to be on it all the time. These players this year have shown this has not been the case."
