Jordan Henderson teared up after hearing the kind words from manager Jurgen Klopp, after he was announced as the Football Writers' Associations' 'Footballer of the Year.'

The Liverpool captain was a somewhat controversial winner of the award on Friday, with many thinking Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne, or one of Henderson's teammates, were more deserving.

There was little question though over the midfielder's impact on his side's first league title in 30 years and member's of the press also took into account his work off the field.

On Friday Henderson accepted the award and was left emotional after a congratulatory message from Klopp, which he had to watch on a phone rather than live in person with no actual ceremony this year.

Speaking to his captain, the former Borussia Dortmund manager said, "Hi, my friend.

"One of the big questions in football what makes a proper player. What is more important? Is it talent or is it attitude?

"I think the easy answer is without talent, you are nothing and without attitude you will stay a talent forever.

"So you are the perfect example that it is the mix which makes the difference. Who would have thought that the young fella coming from Sunderland to Liverpool with big dreams would be one day the best player of the Premier League?

"Maybe you dreamt of it but I'm not sure you thought it would happen. I know you are confident enough to have big dreams but now is there moment where everybody saw what a great player you are, what a great personality you are, what great character you have.

"I know the human being behind the player and you would deserve an award for that as well.

"Many congratulations, very well deserved, outstanding achievement, what a year you had, what a career so far you've had and the best news.. still a lot to come.

"I wish you a wonderful day, enjoy the moment because you don't have to play at Newcastle and, again, best player of the Premier League - wow!"

The former Sunderland midfielder is now synonymous with the Reds' most successful period since the 80's having previously lifted the Champions League, UEFA European Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup.

He completed the set on Wednesday as Klopp and his side got their hands on the Premier League trophy that has up to now evaded the club's grip.

Having missed out to Manchester City by one point last season they have walked away with the title this season and it had been a question of when and not if since about December.

Henderson may have many more occasions to get emotional before his time at Anfield is over.
