Payne Haas to stay at Brisbane Broncos despite saying he wants to leave mid-season

Payne Haas to stay at Brisbane Broncos despite saying he wants to leave mid-season

The star prop has agreed to terms with the clubs after his management advised him not to test the open market.

Payne Haas will stay at the Brisbane Broncos until 2024 despite requesting his release earlier this year.

The Courier Mail reports that the star prop has agreed to terms with the clubs after his management advised him not to test the open market.

The NRL gun had requested an immediate release from his $3 million deal back in May this year, however, the Brisbane side had rejected that plea.

Haas has suffered criticism from Broncos fans and NRL legends alike for his position, copping a chorus of boos at Suncorp Stadium.

The situation was to be revisited at the end of the season and now it appears Haas and his management have taken a U-turn on their initial plan.

The news is a major boost for the Broncos who were at risk of losing him to the likes of the Sydney Roosters.

Brisbane’s CEO Dave Donaghy confirmed that Haas had withdrawn his release request.

He told The Courier-Mail: “Payne's a really important part of our club.

“The contract part of it is settled, there's a commitment in place from all sides with that.

“We've got a contract in place for another two years and I know how much we both want to experience success in that time.

“Payne had another great season and I can see him already working on hitting the ground running when pre-season starts next month.”

The 22-year-old won’t be able to negotiate with any rival teams until November 1, 2023.

The player had initially sought a significant upgrade of close to $350,000 a season for the remainder of his deal.

After a breakdown in negotiations over the change requested his immediate release.

Brisbane publicly denied the request.

They released a statement at the time, saying: “Payne Haas is contracted to the Brisbane Broncos until the end of the 2024 NRL Season. The Club will not be entertaining a release.”

The prop had reportedly gained new management at the time and had requested an upgrade to $1 million in 2023 and $1.2 million in 2024, according to the Daily Telegraph

Broncos legend Corey Payne had called on the Broncos to release Haas at the time, claiming his actions had come off as ungrateful toward the club.

He said: “I would let Payne Haas go right now, right now. I would let him go.

“There’s an argument that Payne gets what he wants but from a club’s perspective, if you have a player inside your four walls that does not want to be there, he’s thrown all the toys out of the cot, he’s said nup I want an immediate release.

Adding: “If you don’t want to play for the Broncos, don’t play. It’s just ridiculous after what the club has done for him.”
