Cody Gakpo once broke Jurgen Klopp's 'golden rule' moments before Everton clash

Cody Gakpo broke Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s ‘golden rule’ ahead of their Premier League vs Everton.

Cody Gakpo once broke one of Jurgen Klopp’s ‘golden rules’ ahead of Liverpool vs Everton.

Back in January 2023, it was confirmed that Dutchman Gakpo would join the Anfield club from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth a reported £44 million.

During one of his first matches for Liverpool, Gakpo lined up against Everton at Anfield.

Ahead of the match, fans spotted that Gakpo appeared to break one of the rules set by manager Klopp.

The Dutchman was seen touching the iconic ‘This Is Anfield’ sign as he walked out onto the pitch.

Klopp has said previously that his players should not touch the sign until they have won something at the club.

The German said: “I've told my players not to touch the 'This Is Anfield' sign until they win something. It's a sign of respect.”

Back in 2020, midfielder Thiago Alcantara also spoke about the famous sign.

He said: “As I heard once from Fernando Torres, this remains heavily the place we passed by for a couple of years, four more years

“And to touch this symbol we have to deserve it and to win all the trophies we can and so that's why today I will not [touch the sign]. I will respect this tradition.”

However, Gakpo could finally be officially allowed to touch the sign if Liverpool win against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, which is set to take place at Wembley later this month.

In addition, the Reds are still well in the race to win the Premier League, FA Cup and the Europa League.

Speaking about his time with Liverpool, Gakpo recently said to the club’s official website: “A year with obviously really good moments, some lesser-good moments, but I'm happy to be here and hopefully beautiful moments to come.

“I really feel at home and I think the club is amazing. It's like a big family. The supporters are amazing every game and show love to all of us. I appreciate it and I love being here.”

Liverpool will be back in Premier League action this weekend when they welcome Burnley to Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
