Manchester United are looking at the possibility of signing Erling Haaland but would consider loaning the striker back to Red Bull Salzburg.

For all of the problems with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team this season the main one has be scoring goals. The Red Devils are reportedly in the market for a striker in January to help fix the problems.

According to reports United are very interested in Erling Haaland, with the 19-year-old scoring 39 goals in 24 appearances for club and country this season, but according to one report it might not help them this season.

Solskjaer's side, meanwhile, have scored 16 Premier League goals, five in the Europa League and three in the Carabao Cup this season.

The Mirror claim that United are considering a bid for the Norwegian which would include sending him back on loan to Salzburg till the summer, in order to jump to the front of the queue.

Should Haaland, son of former Leeds United player Alf Inge, become available there would be a whole host of super clubs interested in signing the teenager.

United's plan to move for him in January would likely see them get a jump on teams and sending him back on loan to Salzburg might entice the Austrians to sell up.

The problem with the plan of course is that it would still leave Solskjaer's side short of options upfront for the rest of the season.

After selling Romelu Lukaku and loaning out Alexis Sanchez, both to Inter, the Premier League side only signed Daniel James in the summer to boost their attacking options.

That has left the manager with only Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood as options to play up front, with an average age of 21.

Martial was out injured for nine games and the team didn't score more than one in any game without him. Since the Frenchman's return they have scored three times in three of the four games he's started.

Whilst it looks like Haaland wouldn't be the man to save them this season another option could be a short term move for Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic.

The Croatian was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer and hasn't played a single minute for the Old Lady this season.

Only this current United team could consider not bringing in a young goal scoring phenomenon in January and instead signing a 33-year-old who hasn't played, the misery continues.
